Old Sturbridge Village: Custom Steel Railings
Balancing Traditional Craftsmanship with Modern Fabrication Techniques
In 2024, Hillside Ironworks of New Braintree, Massachusetts, completed the fabrication of custom steel railings for the historic Center Meetinghouse at Old Sturbridge Village. This project gave us the opportunity to work on one of New England's most recognizable living history museums, and it was one we were excited to be a part of.
The project required a balance of traditional craftsmanship and modern fabrication techniques to complement the historic character of the meetinghouse while meeting today's structural and safety requirements.
At Hillside Ironworks, we specialize in the design, fabrication, and installation of custom architectural metalwork throughout New England, and projects like this are a great example of blending timeless craftsmanship with modern engineering.
Each railing was carefully fabricated from high-quality structural steel using precision measuring, cutting, welding, and finishing techniques. Every component was carefully fit and inspected throughout the process to ensure clean lines, lasting durability, and a refined appearance that looked like it truly belonged at the historic meetinghouse.
The curved sections presented a unique challenge, but those details are often what make a project the most rewarding.
To complete the project, we applied a durable protective finish that provides long-term corrosion resistance while maintaining a classic appearance that complements the architecture of the 1832 meetinghouse. The finished railings were designed to blend seamlessly with the building, preserving its historic aesthetic without taking attention away from the original craftsmanship.
Projects like this remind us why we enjoy what we do. Working on historic properties requires patience, attention to detail, and a great deal of respect for the original builders. We had a lot of fun bringing this project to life, learned a few things along the way, and are proud of how the finished railings complement such an important piece of New England history.
Whether we're restoring a historic landmark or fabricating custom metalwork for a modern space, our goal is always the same: build quality products that are made to last and crafted with care.
